When your hormones are out of balance you can experience many unpleasant symptoms. Some of these include menstrual irregularities such as heavy and painful periods, menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, thyroid imbalances, weight gain, depression and memory problems.
WHAT ARE HORMONES?
Hormones are chemical messengers created by glands of the endocrine system which cause a reaction in tissues or cells. They bring about a variety of effects, depending on which tissue or organ they are targeting. This is why a hormone imbalance can cause a variety of symptoms at different times of life.
Imbalances occur when the body produces too little or too much of a particular hormone. It can also occur when a hormone doesn’t break down quickly enough, so its levels become elevated. This often happens in the case of oestrogen.
Reflexology is known to have a number of benefits including removing toxins from the body, supporting the immune system, improving circulation and stimulating the endocrine glands, all of which can affect hormone balance.
Reflexology has been used successfully for many health issues connected with hormone imbalance, such as:
- Irregular menstrual cycles, heavy and painful periods
- PMS
- Anxiety and depression associated with pregnancy
- Infertility
- Menopausal symptoms such as aching joints, bloating and hot flushes
- Sleep disturbances
- Skin problems
- Concentration and memory difficulties
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Low libido
- Headaches and migraines
One of the greatest benefits of reflexology is stress relief. Hormonal imbalances are closely connected with stress so just the simple stress-relieving effects of reflexology can help balance hormones. Remember, reflexology switches on our para-sympathetic nervous system and takes us out of fight or flight mode and puts us into rest and digest mode.
CLINICAL TRIALS ON REFLEXOLOGY AND HORMONE BALANCE
To date there have been a handful of clinical trials with regard to reflexology and hormonal imbalances. In one study, volunteers who received reflexology experienced a 23% reduction in PMS symptoms compared to women who had received no treatment (2). In another study it was clear that reflexology can alleviate stress by reducing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol (3).
